I run a family nextcloud, a radio station and this mastodon instance on digital ocean droplets. Is linode better than DO? or about the same? Or should I just host these from home? If I do it from home I may use cloudflare zero trust. Not sure what to do, but the DO bill is getting hefty. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

@Medus

RackNerd has some great annual deals on VPSs. Their closest one is in Atlanta. They work great!

@Medus

I was wondering if you could host your podcasts on them. Probably plenty of bandwidth on those plans.

@DarthRadar Yeah, that would save me some serious money. The plan I have now is unlimited storage and bandwidth, with a ton of subdomains, but i think i may be abusing some rule by serving my mp3s from hostgator. We are starting to get a lot more downloads and I may need another solution in case they ding us for it.

@Medus

Do they tell you how much bandwidth you're using? The podcast mp3s can't be taking up that much space.

@Medus

This is another great VPS company that offers unlimited bandwidth, and block storage slabs at $1.25/mo per 256GB.

@DarthRadar I will look into these tomorrow, gotta say I am not looking forward to migrating, but I have to get costs down.

@DarthRadar yeah, the rss eats up a lot though, everytime a listener's player checks for new episodes, 120kb, we have a few thousand subs according to the best data I can cobble together. The thing is, the webhost I am using isn't meant for serving media, and I think hosting the files with them is technically against the TOS

@Medus

Unless I'm making an embarrassing math error, 10k subscribers pulling rss every hour for a month is a little over 850 GB of bandwidth (at 120 Kb).

RackNerd's 2.5GB RAM; 50GB SSD plan for $22.5.88/year has 6TB of bandwidth per month.

@DarthRadar Right, and it doesn't look like they care what the bandwidth is, which is my main thing. Hostgator has different plans for website and media hosting. So I will probably be switching soon I have had no complaints about HG at all. I am just paying for stuff I don't need and also don't want to run afoul of the plan TOS and get shut down. I have back up options so I would only be down for a bit, but it would be nice to save some money

@DarthRadar I would need more storage than that though, I have other sites in addition to FFF and MedusPod. I am sure I can find a solution. Thanks for the links.

@DarthRadar Yeah, that is some sexy storage right there. I have been deep in storage world this week, researching NAS devices. Settled on the Asustor Lockerstor2 gen with 16gb of ram. Putting two 8tb hdds in it raid 1 and 4 500gb nvme ssds. one for shared stuff and one each for each family member. I can't wait to get all of the parts in
